Perseverance

Me: I admire you.

Nell: Most kind.

Me: You never give up.

Nell: Of course not.

Me: You persevere until you get to where you need to be.

Nell: If you’re talking about sitting next to Kev in the evenings, then you are right. We sit with our chairs together by the fire holding paws. It’s how we like it.

Me: I wasn’t, actually, but is that why you keep giving me the hard stare every evening?

Nell: You need your rest. I’m merely encouraging you to go up to bed.

Me: But sometimes it’s only just after 8pm, Nell.

Nell: You probably look tired.

Me: Anyway, I was talking about down on the beach. The others are always so far ahead of you but you don’t let it bother you.

Nell: There’s no point.

Me: You just amble slowly along until you get to them and the sea.

Nell: And you walk by my side.

Me: On days when the tide is out you have to walk quite a long way.

Nell: I certainly do.

Me: In fact, Kev and I were trying to work out if we could make some kind of contraption to get you there when it becomes too far to walk.

Nell: I beg your pardon?

Me: A trolley type thing Kev could pull along.

Nell: I’m not a bag of groceries.

Me: We just want you to be able to come with us.

Nell: I know you do.

Me: I can’t bear the thought of you not being there.

Nell: I know you can’t. Things can’t stay the same for ever unfortunately.

Me: I wish they could.

Nell: I’m always going to be with you. One way or another.

Me: I hope so.

Nell: I know so. You and me. Always.

Me: Yes. Sorry.
