Waiting

Nell: You were very gloomy yesterday. It was most unpleasant and brought us all down.

Me: Oh dear. My sincere apologies for that. It was Monday and it was raining.

Nell: No excuse.

Me: I can’t always be cheerful, Nell. Sometimes things just get me down. Like this dreadful weather.

Nell: Well, try not to do it again, please. Where did you go?

Me: What do you mean?

Nell: You left us for several hours and you came back tired and soaking wet.

Me: It was raining. I went to my aqua fitness class at the gym. You saw me take my gym bag.

Nell: It was a Bag for Life.

Me: That’s true, but it’s the one I always use. I don’t have a gym bag.

Nell: We sat by the window all day waiting for you to come home.

Me: Firstly, it wasn’t all day and secondly, the puppies sat by the window. You lazed in my armchair.

Nell: I looked out of the window now and again.

Me: Kev made a lovely fire to keep you warm and Herr Hoffmann made soup and crunchy rolls.

Nell: A Labrador needs warmth and sustenance when Waiting.

Me: Really?

Nell: Yes. We dogs do it a lot. In fact, I would go so far as to say we are experts.

Me: Are you now?

Nell: Yes. Cats don’t care, of course. They have their own agenda and Waiting doesn’t come into it.

Me: I’ve noticed The Cat can be a little impatient.

Nell: That’s one word for it. I’ve seen The Cat push a cup off the table in a cafe if it’s been too long before it was served.

Me: A full one?

Nell: Obviously not, or it wouldn’t have been Waiting. Do keep up.

Me: Oh yes. Sorry.
